Sitcom star jailed for 30 years

That ‘70s Show star Danny Masterson has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women who were in the Church of Scientology with him in 2003.

Masterson, 47, who was found guilty of raping victims Jen B and N Trout in his Hollywood home in June, received his sentence on Thursday, California time.

The actor remained silent in court as he received 15 years for each count, which will be served consecutively.

“One way or another you will have to come to terms with your prior actions, and their consequences,” Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedoe told Masterson, according to the New York Post.

The victims testified that they passed out after Materson gave them drinks, then he proceeded to violently rape them.

Prosecutors claimed that Materson raped N Trout so violently that she threw up in her mouth.

Prior to the sentencing, N Trout read out her victim statement, where she slammed the actor for his violent actions, but also forgave him and hoped that he would do better in prison.

“You relish in hurting women. It is your addiction. It is without question your favourite thing to do,” she said, according to court reporter Meghann Cuniff.

“Life is precious and fragile. Find your heart … Learn something. Read books. Listen to the brightness of nothing and get well. I forgive you."

Jen B, on the other hand, reiterated the fact that there was no conspiracy to take down Materson or the Church of Scientology.

This comes after the defence had previously argued that the sexual acts were consensual, accusing the women of co-ordinating their stories to discredit former Hollywood star.

The victims also told the court that Scientology officials told them not to report the crime because Masterson was a high-ranking member of the church, and instead they were put through an ethics program.

After an initial deadlock vote, the jury found Masterson guilty of two counts of rape, but could not reach a unanimous verdict on a third count alleging that the former star also assaulted his ex-girlfriend Christina Bixler.

However, he was not charged with any counts of drugging as there were no toxicology evidence to back up the women's statement, which will likely play a role in Masterson’s plan to appeal the verdict.

The Church of Scientology also released a statement, criticising the notion that they tried to silence the complaints, claiming that the women's testimony were “uniformly false”.

“The Church has no policy prohibiting or discouraging members from reporting criminal conduct of anyone — Scientologists or not — to law enforcement,”

“Quite the opposite, church policy explicitly demands Scientologists abide by all laws of the land.”

Image: Lucy Nicholson - Pool/Getty Images

Man purchases home for $1.50 - but there’s a catch!

A man struggling to enter the property market has revealed how he purchased his home for just $1.50 - but there’s a catch.

Danny McCubbin, who is originally from the Gold Coast, wanted to upend his life once more and move from busy London.

On his mind was a quiet, peaceful area where he could enjoy his life – and the small town in Mussomeli, Mussomeli, took his breath away.

“I fell in love with this town,” Danny told news.com.au.

Danny took a leap of faith and bought his home in 2019 for just $1.50 (plus a further 3000 euros for notary and inspection fees).

However, a condition of the house was that he would have to renovate it within three years of purchase or he’d have to pay a further 5000 euros (AU$7,571) to the government.

The pandemic threw a spanner in the works, making Danny’s mission to renovate his home almost impossible.

Danny then decided it would be cheaper to purchase another home and renovate that.

“I ended up buying myself a house for 8000 euros, which is less than the cost of my car. And I spent 5000 on it and renovated that,” he revealed.

“That’s where I live now. It’s a beautiful place, it’s got a view of the mountains, it’s just perfect for me.”

Danny offered his best tips to those looking to do the same: spend time in the city where you plan to buy, see as many houses as you can, bring a friend who knows a bit about engineering, and don’t fall for the view.

Images: Instagram

What made Bob Saget’s Danny Tanner so different from other sitcom dads

Bob Saget, who died on Jan. 9, 2022, is probably best remembered for his role as Danny Tanner on the popular sitcom “Full House,” which aired from 1987 to 1995.

I think fans of the show have such fond memories of this character because Danny exemplified what it meant to “be there” as a parent. A single dad whose wife had passed away, he was eager to lend an ear to daughters D.J., Stephanie and Michelle, offering them support and reassurance through the twists and turns of childhood and adolescence.

Why heap so much praise on a sitcom dad? It’s easy to disregard TV as mere mindless entertainment. But entertainment media can both reflect and reshape culture – including how fathers interact with their children. They can influence how viewers think about fathers, regardless of the accuracy of those portrayals.

As someone who studies stereotypes of fathers, I view Danny as an avatar of the changing expectations of fatherhood that began in the late 1970s.

Danny Tanner and ‘being there’

Danny Tanner was a 30-something widower when Full House premiered. That wasn’t a common situation for his demographic – less than 1% in his bracket shared it – and it allowed viewers to watch Danny parent his three daughters with the help of his brother-in-law and his best friend.

Nonetheless, in nearly every episode, viewers saw Danny “being there” for his family. “Being there” is a concept that describes being physically and emotionally involved with your children. This term took on particular significance for fathers in the late 20th century. “Being there” allowed dads to be seen as more than just financial providers and recognized that fathers interact with their children in varied and important ways.

In the earlier part of the century, fathers were assumed to be breadwinners and not much else, a stereotype reflected in the era’s popular media. For example, sitcom fathers on “Father Knows Best,” which aired from 1954 to 1960, and “The Donna Reed Show,” which ended its run in 1966, bore little responsibility for actual child care beyond a pat on the head and some occasional discipline.

Beginning in the 1970s, psychologist Michael Lamb encouraged a change in how we thought about fathers and broadened the definition of what he called “father involvement.”

Lamb proposed three dimensions of father involvement: engagement, availability and responsibility. The last of these, responsibility – which involved financial support and parental guidance – could be spotted in some form in the preceding sitcoms. But engagement and availability, which tend to involve day-to-day emotional support, were almost entirely foreign.

Danny Tanner’s approach to fatherhood, by contrast, demonstrated perhaps the fullest realization of these changing expectations.

One episode, “Back to School Blues,” featured oldest daughter D.J. starting junior high. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t go well. She’s teased by older girls, wears the same outfit as one of the teachers, and spends lunch alone. (I was a year younger than D.J., and this episode made me nervous about my own entry into junior high.)

When Danny doesn’t approve of D.J.‘s attempts to look older to fit in and make friends, she storms off to her room saying she wants to be left alone. Danny says he can’t do that, and then listens as she explains everything that went wrong at school.

In this short scene, he reinforced family rules and provided emotional support, while showing that he would “be there” for D.J. whenever she needed.

A different kind of dad

Though Danny represented a departure from the typical sitcom father, he didn’t exactly spearhead a new trend.

Immature and irresponsible fathers – the kind seen in popular shows like “The Simpsons,” “Home Improvement” and “Married … With Children” – were more commonplace. To this day, the stereotype of the bumbling dad persists on TV.

Danny comforts D.J. after she admits she isn’t happy with her body.

In my research, I found that single sitcom dads with full child care responsibilities were shown interacting with their children more often than married sitcom dads. Compared to their married counterparts on the tube, they were more likely to offer kindness, care, love, support and guidance. Along with Danny, these characters included Mr. Drummond on “Diff’rent Strokes,” Tony Micelli in “Who’s the Boss?” and Maxwell Sheffield on “The Nanny.”

On the other hand, married sitcom father-child interactions were more likely to involve criticism and sarcastic humor. In fact, married sitcom fathers often made jokes at their children’s expense.

Why does this discrepancy exist?

My research has found that in real life, married fathers are thought to be loving and kind but with room for improvement as parents. They’re seen as the right-hand man to mothers, who have taken the lead in parenting. Because of this, people expect more bumbling and less skill.

Single dads, however, tend to be viewed as selfless and dedicated, because the assumption is that they’ve put their children above all else.

Danny Tanner isn’t the novelty today that he was in the early 1990s. But if his character is instructive in any way, it’s that dads shouldn’t have to lose their wives to be the best parent they can be.<!-- End of code. Thief breaks into home of family who lost three kids in crash tragedy

A family who lost their three children in a horror car crash in February of 2020 have been robbed by a masked intruder in broad daylight.

Leila Abdallah lost Anthony, Angelina and Sienna, who all died when a drunk and drugged driver ran them over in Oatlands.

Now, she and her husband Danny have been hit with another blow after reports claim the mother was at her home in Telopea when a masked intruder broke inside at around 11:45 am on Wednesday.

Ms Abdallah was standing in the kitchen looking at photos of her children when she saw the perpetrator near the front door.

He was holding a bag and other belongings but quickly fled when she confronted him.

CCTV caught the man wearing black track pants and a dark blue hoodie.

He was recorded running away from the house and hopping into a white Audi S3 Sedan.

The man, who had an accomplice driver, had taken jewellery, handbags and other possessions from the upstairs bedrooms.

Ms Abdallah told reporters that while the material value of the possessions was not important, some of the stolen items had sentimental value linked to her children.

“He took a watch, but it’s not about the watch. This watch reminds me of me and Angelina walking to the store to buy this watch. So it’s a bit sentimental for us, and invading our privacy,” she said.

“God’s watching him, God knows who he is,” Ms Abdallah went on to say, calling on the man to listen to his conscience.

Ms Abdallah says the man may have taken an iPhone that belonged to her late son Anthony.

The robber is believed to possibly have been inside for 10 minutes ransacking the bedrooms.

Police are calling on the man and the driver of the Audi to turn themselves in, saying the Abdallahs have had to face horror after horror since losing their three children and their cousin Veronique Sakr.

“In the last 12 months, the victims of the Telopea incident have endured an incredible ordeal,” Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson, Cumberland area police commander said on Thursday.

“And I appeal to the conscience of the people responsible for this crime to hand themselves in to the police, and I also appeal to them to return the property of those victims.”

The intruder is described as being Caucasian, skinny, about 183 centimetres tall, aged in his 20s and with light hair.

The Audi’s registration plates read as EGJ-56M, and is thought to have been stolen from North Rocks earlier this week.

Samuel William Davidson will spend a minimum of 21 years behind bars after he ploughed into a group of children on a Sydney pavement, a court has ruled on Friday.

The man, who was on drugs, drunk and speeding was sentenced to a maximum of 28 years in jail for the tragic crash in Oatlands killed siblings Antony, 13, Angelina, 12, and Sienna Abdallah, 8, and their cousin Veronique Sakr, 11.

He will be eligible for release in January 2041.

Danny Abdallah, the father who lost three of his children in the devastating crash said nothing could bring them back, and the lengthy jail term was “God’s will.”

“Whether he gets one year or 100 years we won’t get Antony, Angelina, Sienna and Veronique back,” he said while standing alongside his stricken wife Leila.

“The most beautiful, innocent and pure-hearted children were killed on the 1st of February 2020

“We will all have our hearts broken until the day we take our last breath and no sentence can help ease that pain.”

Mr Abdallah said the sentence meant that the Davidson family had also lost a son, meaning it was a “lose-lose” situation for everyone.

“Our focus was never really about what serving a sentence was going to be,” he said.

“When we made that choice of forgiveness we focused on our kids.

“We knew justice would be served and it was served because it was God’s will this sentence.”

The mother of Veronique, Bridget Sakr said too many lives have been lost due to dangerous driving that is often influenced by drugs and alcohol.

On February 22, seven children were walking along the footpath to a local IGA. They had been meaning to buy ice cream to evade the summer heat.

At around 7:30 pm, the group of kids were hit by Davidson who had been travelling at 133km/h after 12 hours of drinking and drug-taking.

Judge Bennett revealed that the graphic scene had seen the kid’s bodies found metres apart from each other.

Out of the seven that were struck, only three survived with horrible injuries.

Judge James Bennett spoke in court on Friday, saying Davidson’s “horrific” actions and “menacing” driving that day showed he had abandoned all his morals.

“The manner of driving was such that tragedy was inevitable,” the judge said.

“The magnitude of the tragedy extends to the unimaginable.”

Who is Danny Wallis? The man who bought three houses on The Block

Danny Wallis, a super-rich IT entrepreneur, dominated The Block's auction day and snapped up three out of four houses for almost $12 million.

He offered "insane" bids on each house, which led to jaw-dropping moments for the excited contestants.

Even host Scott Cam was surprised, as he said that it was "the most unbelievable day in Block history".

Fans of the renovation show will remember Wallis, as he's bought Mitch and Mark's property last season for a cool $3.374 million and bidding on all five properties.

However, despite his love of buying houses from the TV show, he's insisted he's never watched the show.

This didn't stop him from being called a "bit of a nuisance" by Block buyer's advocate Frank Valentic.

“I’ve never been at an auction where people get five minutes think time,” he said.

“Danny is a local businessman here in Melbourne … We’ve seen him at a Block auction before, and he has a tactic of confusing everyone in the crowd,” Block presenter Shelley Craft explained during last year’s finale, after Wallis offered a bid that left the auctioneer flummoxed: $3,308,050. The auctioneer quipped that it was “$3,308,000 and half a litre of petrol.”

Despite his showboating antics, Wallis has plans for the South Australian farmer couple's home.

He's going to donate the home to My Room Children's Cancer Charity.

“What an amazing day it was and a real thrill to buy the three houses. I was so impressed with the builds this year, the location in Brighton, and the potential as an investor for the properties in the future,” Wallis said in a statement released by Nine.

“The My Room Children’s Cancer Charity do so many wonderful things for sick children and their families, and they will benefit so much from having access to Daniel and Jade’s amazing home.

“It is made extra special for me because I know Daniel and Jade have been through so much with their daughter Isla over the years, in and out of hospital, and they will understand just how important the house will be for My Room and all the incredible work they do for sick children and their families.”

“I didn’t feel I was worthy”: AFL coach Danny Frawley on his mental health struggle

Ten months before his death, Danny Frawley opened up about his mental health struggles.

On an episode of his No Man Should Ever Walk Alone podcast, the AFL star detailed his battle with depression to psychologist Peter Zarris.

“Dramatic changes in mood and behaviour, that was me … isolation, I actually craved it when I was going through my worst,” he said.

“Guys would text me, say they’d come around, because they knew I was battling a bit. I’d text them ‘come around’ and I’d actually pull the shutters down on the blinds … for some reason I didn’t feel I was worthy enough.”

Frawley recalled how the people around him brushed off his coaching failures by citing his achievement as a player.

“‘Danny, the coaching didn’t go that well but boy are you doing a great job in the media. You were a captain for nine years out at St Kilda that must have been absolutely outstanding’,” he quoted.

“I can remember going to functions and not even having conversations with people – I don’t know whether I was just walking around like a peacock – but it was all about what people thought of me. But at the end of the day, it was what I thought about me.”

The former St Kilda captain and Richmond coach said he coped with his mental health issues and lack of sleep by turning to alcohol and training.

“That was what I was taught in the past, if you’ve got an issue work it off,” he said. “So I actually did 10 things at once.”

He said at one point his wife Anita told him he was no longer the man she married, and insisted he should see a doctor.

“A lot of comedians have depression – and that was me,” Frawley said.

“Acting the goat in the media, my wife would say ‘gee, you’re so vivacious in front of a group, in front of the media and you come home Danny, and you’re a different bloke to the one I married’. I’m sure if I didn’t go through what I went through, my wife was going to leave me.”

Frawley said while perception of mental illness had changed since he began playing football more than three decades ago, it still had a long way to go.

“We’re still in this zone of we better hide in the corner, put our head in our hands and think ‘oh gee, I hope no one finds out I’ve got a mental health issue’. The glass ceiling has been cracked but we need to smash it open.”

“The fact that it [suicide] is preventable is the most tragic thing,” Zarris responded. “I can’t emphasise enough, depression isn’t like having a permanent disability – you can move past it.”

Frawley died on Monday at 56 in a car crash near Ballarat, Victoria. Calls for more resources and discussions around men’s mental health have been renewed as a coroner is investigating Frawley’s death.

We love you so much.”

View this post on Instagram

That pretty mama in the middle. Why Danny Green broke down in tears on “I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!”

Danny Green might have a reputation as one of Australia’s “tough guys”, but a recent episode of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! proves the boxing legend also has a softer side.

The 44-year-old appeared as a guest on Steve Price’s revamped Jungle Radio segment and told the radio personality just how much he missed and loved his Dad.

"I'm an ambassador for coward's punch campaign, and if that was in the street, that's what it would have been labelled" - @dannygreenboxer on his last fight with Mundine. #ImACelebrityAU #JungleRadio pic.twitter.com/ZwtvEihAOj
— #ImACelebrityAU (@ImACelebrityAU) February 25, 2018

“He's given me the life I've got,” said an emotional Green.

Green’s father is reportedly struggling with dementia, and the former boxer said the hardest part about the experience is not being able to be there for his old man.

“I miss you mate. I miss you Dad. I love you Dad,” he added.

Fans of the reality TV show praised Green on social media.

“Pretty sure also your dad will be proud, god bless you and the family Danny!” one viewer tweeted.

They added: “So much respect to you and what you are doing with coward punch campaign.”

What are your thoughts?
